His Master’s Vids: Jupiter Quartet at Lincoln Center
Jupiter Quartet, U.S.A (formed in 2001)
Felix Mendelssohn, Op 80, I. Allegro vivace assai
No gimmicks. No faces. Everything is real.
The room seems terrifying to me. Like the air was sucked out the moment they walked in.
I feel oppressed when I hear the first sound in this video, or rather the absence of sound.
I made up this story in my mind that this show is a big deal for these young people, how this piece is their piece, how they know it back and forth, not just the piece but each other also.
2 of them are married, 2 of them are related…mmm
Quickly, their sound gets me past the queasiness, past my own baggage and hypothetical fear of performing. I say hypothetical because I’m really only afraid of performing in theory. The after and before are always scary to me. The now comes with too many things to think about. No space to think about useless things. Yet the fear that THESE things can stop you, mute, naked and red in the face, for all to see, a huge disappointment to yourself…that’s scary…in theory.
Back to the cotton thick silence, invisible, made of the audience’s stares.
Jupiter delivers and amazing performance. The violist is my favorite.
