The Once More, With Feeling! series is back by popular demand!
New to us this season, Henri Dutilleux’s Ainsi la nuit (“Thus, the Night”) is something like a nighttime diversion down a darkening path, where one’s other senses are magnified in the absence of sight. It is mysterious, sometimes sinister, but full of wonder.
This is a piece that reveals itself with each successive listen, brimming as it is with elusive riddles, mischievous trap doors, and the subtlest Proustian foreshadowing. Even though it is a gripping listen without any knowledge of its inner workings, this quartet tends to move into the realm of the ravishing once its layers are pulled back.
So we’ve invited the eminently charming Julliard professor and Ainsi la nuit specialist Dr. Kendall Briggs to lead our excavation of this extraordinary work. We’ll perform a substantial excerpt at the beginning of the show before inviting Professor Briggs to illuminate our way through the labyrinth. No previous knowledge of this piece, string quartets, or even western classical music is necessary. We’ll be exploring together with you, and then we’ll perform the sentire work at the show’s conclusion. You might just be astonished at how marvelously the piece transforms for you in just one sitting.
