From Raw to Refined: How a Recording Comes to Life in Real-Time

  • Zoom (CENTRAL TIME) (map)

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes for a studio recording? The truth is, playing in front of the microphones is only a tiny percentage of the hundreds of hours required before an album hits your ears, and on August 5th, we’re inviting you into this often secretive process.

Our insanely-talented recording and mixing engineer, Dan Nichols (Aphorism Studios), will be on-screen with us and you won’t believe your ears as we take you from the raw audio (the “capture”), through the unbelievable magic of editing, the mixing and EQing phases (setting balances for individual voices and shaping their color), and into mastering. Are “mixing” and “mastering” unfamiliar concepts to you? Don’t worry…you’ll be an armchair expert by the end of this event.

With Dan sharing his screen so you can see the software making changes live, we’ll zero in on an excerpt of Brahms’ String Quartet No. 1, Allegro – the first track on our upcoming double-album, Experiments in Living – to show you the myriad choices that go into even just a handful of measures of music. It is a truly transformational process, and we’ll be fielding your questions and responses as we move along.

If you know Spektral, you know we love opening up and demystifying our processes with our fans. This is vulnerable territory…maybe the most private aspect of creating a record…so we’re very eager, and a little anxious, to share this with you. You’ll likely never listen to any album the same way again.

Due to limited space, a minimum donation of $10 is requested to register for this event

This event is produced in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Chicago
